Karen Slattery Educational Research Center for Child Development
Who was Karen Slattery?
The center is a memorial to Karen Slattery, a 14-year-old Delray Beach girl who was murdered while baby-sitting in 1984. Karen's family contributed more than $50,000 to the center's construction.
The Delray Police Department caught her attacker and received a large reward for solving the crime. They donated the entire reward to the center.
Karen's mother, Carolyn Slattery, attended the opening of the center. Sadly Karen's father, Eugene, who became an advocate for crime victims' rights after his daughter's death, didn't live to see the center. He died in a plane crash two weeks before ground was broken in July 1989.
