TESOL Professional Development Program

TESOL Orientation Session

New and returning students of this program must attend one of these sessions at the following locations:

  • Friday, August 15, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., ED 313, FAU Boca campus
  •  Friday, August 15, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., EC 102, FAU Jupiter campus
PROGRAM MISSION

The TESOL Professional Development Program at Florida Atlantic University is funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Its overall aim is to improve the academic performance of K-12 language minority children by improving teacher, administrator, and teacher educator training in all areas served by FAU’s four campuses in St. Lucie, Jupiter, Boca Raton, and Davie.

PROGRAM BENEFITS
  • Free credit-bearing graduate-level ESOL certification courses (applicable towards a masters degree) for 100 Teachers (starting Fall 2007)
  • Book/gas stipends for participating teachers
  • Free graduate-level credit-bearing course for a limited number of school administrators (anticipated start date: Fall or Spring 2008)
  • Free inservice course with stipends for FAU teacher educators (starting Summer 2008)
  • Stipends for a limited number of teachers to complete a masters degree
  • High quality graduate-level training for teachers, administrators, and teacher education faculty led by senior FAU graduate faculty
  • State-of-the-art curriculum and materials based on the latest research, aligned with State and professional standards
  • Convenient locations and schedules designed for working educators
ESOL TRAINING FOR K-12 TEACHERS

TESOL Professional Development Program (TESOL PDP) is providing ESOL classes for contract teachers responsible for teaching Language Arts. All courses are FREE; the program has also been funded to cover textbook costs for each participant. Students will be responsible for transportation access (parking sticker) and ID fees.

The courses we offer at the graduate level are:

TSL 4251 Applied Linguistics and TESOL
EDG 5705 Seminar in Multicultural Education
TSL 5345 Methods of Teaching ESOL
TSL 5440 Language Assessment: Testing and Evaluation
TSL 5142 Curriculum Development in ESOL

These courses can be applied toward a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with ESOL endorsement and Multicultural Education with ESOL endorsement at FAU. Classes are available on a first-come, first-served basis beginning August 2007.

  • Step 3: You will receive an e-mail confirmation regarding your registration. Please note that each application will be reviewed for eligibility by the school district office before being approved for ESOL endorsement courses.

INFORMATION ON FEES
  1. As a program participant, you are eligible for free in-state tuition and an allowance for books or other fees related to courses completed (not to exceed $80/year per student) to complete your ESOL endorsement.
  2. Assume the modest costs for each semester’s transportation access/parking decal (fall and Spring- $60; summer A, B or C - $25) and a one-time student ID fee ($10) which must be paid by the posted deadline to avoid any late fees. The student ID fee must be paid even if you don’t intend to get the FAU ID card. The program cannot be responsible for paying these fees and/or any parking-or ID-related late fees imposed on program participants.
NEW FEES FOR STUDENTS SEEKING NON-DEGREE ENROLLMENT
  1. Effective Fall 2008, FAU will impose a one-time $30 fee on students applying for non-degree enrollment in addition to the transportation access and ID fees listed above. The program cannot be responsible for paying these fees and/or any parking-or ID-related late fees imposed on program participants.
  2. Former degree-seeking or FAU graduates are not subject to an application fee. If last enrollment was more than 7 years ago, you must submit a new admissions application with the appropriate documents along with a new application fee.
