On January
29 & 30, 2004, the College of
Education at Florida Atlantic
University (FAU) hosted the
first regional conference:
Literacy in Teaching: Next Steps
for University Partners. The
goal of the conference was to
help identify the role of
universities and colleges in
preparing all teachers to be
reading teachers. Of particular
importance was to determine what
school districts need from
higher education to encourage
collaborative professional
development for teachers,
especially in regard to research
in literacy practices that
target strategies and needs of
middle school learners.
The conference considered the
current research, National and
State reading initiatives, and
invited community partners, K-12
educators (including the schools
districts of Miami, Broward,
Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie,
Indian River, Okeechobee, and
Hendry Counties), community
colleges and university
educators to collaboratively
discuss the issues, priorities,
goals, and next steps.
Conference participants were
invited to become Literacy
Leaders, as FAU, along with its
partners developed a framework
for Literacy in Teaching to
impact higher education in
Florida. The conference served
as the first step toward the
development and dissemination of
research, programs, and projects
to help FAU and other colleges
and universities become leaders
in literacy.
