THE DEPARTMENT OF COUNSELOR EDUCATION

Application Process

Thank you for your interest in the Masters degree program in Counselor Education at Florida Atlantic University. If you are seeking to be a Professional School Counselor, Counselor of Mental Health, or Counselor of Rehabilitation, to apply for admission to the program, you must complete a graduate application from the Office of Graduate Admission.   The completed application, official transcripts indicating degree received, and official GRE scores should be sent to the Office of Graduate Admissions with sufficient time for that office to forward your application to this department by the current application deadline.  Do not send these items to the Department, as it will only delay your application.

The Department of Counselor Education requirements are:

  • Professional Goal Statement (1-2 pages)

  • A separate page describing your work experience related to counseling

  •  Three letters of recommendation attesting to your suitability for graduate study and entry into the field of professional counseling.

Please send these items directly to the Department of Counselor Education at the address listed below to arrive by the current application deadline.  We will hold these items for the receipt of the application, transcript's and GRE scores from the Graduate Admissions office.

When your application packet is completed, it will be put into the current pool of applicants.  The application deadline is twice a year. If your application is complete February 1st, consideration for Fall admission or July 1st, for Spring admission consideration.   Everything must be received in this department by that date.  Applications for admission to the Florida Atlantic University Counselor Education program are considered on a competitive basis.

The Department does offer Non-Degree registration. You can take up to 18 credits before acceptance at FAU.  Only 6 credits from another University can apply (must be less than 7 years old). If applicable, this would correct the credits accepted from FAU to 12 before acceptance.

So, you can still start now, upon acceptance you can apply your credits to the program.

To start:

1) You would need to register as a Non-degree seeking student first, if not already a student in FAU.

 (Application avail.) On http://www.fau.edu/registrar/forms.htm#nondegree

2) Then you would come to the Department for a faculty signature. This would OK your seat in the classroom (this procedure is required for any and all courses in the program).

3) The Core courses required by the Department for you to start with:

MHS 6055 Lifespan
MHS 6401 Theories & Techniques
MHS 5005 Processes

We welcome your inquiry and hope you choose Florida Atlantic University for your graduate education.
