Welcome from the Department Chair

I want to personally welcome you to the Department of Exercise Science and Health Promotion at Florida Atlantic University. This web site will introduce you to our outstanding department which is known for high academic standards, innovative research and teaching, excellent students and professional faculty. I can personally assure you the departmental faculty is genuinely interested in each student's pursuit of professional academic and career goals, whether at the graduate or undergraduate level. In fact, our faculty and many alumni are known not only nationally, but internationally for their current work and research.

The ESHP department has approximately 250 undergraduate students at the junior and senior level. These undergraduates often pursue careers in many diverse fields, such as physical therapy, sport medicine, cardiac/pulmonary rehabilitation, corporate fitness, medical school, allied health, coaching (strength and conditioning), country club fitness, and other industry positions. Our program is consistent with the American College of Sports Medicine and the National Strength and Conditioning Association's standards. We also have 40 to 60 graduate students who can select from four different tracks of study (strength & conditioning, exercise physiology, health promotion and health, fitness and aging). Many of these students are in the research or teaching graduate assistant positions during their study, where they receive additional training and research experience. These assistantships provide the graduate student with a tuition reimbursement and approximately $11,000+ for twelve months.

As chair of the department, I encourage you to explore these web pages and become a part of our fascinating major. Remember, our department is located in Davie, ten minutes from the world-famous Fort Lauderdale beaches. If you are already a part of our major, you will be successful if you work hard, are always prepared, and take advantage of all of our department resources.

If you are on campus, please introduce yourself to our faculty and me. I do welcome the opportunity to meet you in person. Best wishes in the pursuit of your professional career goals.

Sincerely,

B. Sue Graves, Ed.D., FACSM

Chair
