Expertise / Interests

Dr. Mary Lou Duffy is a Professor of Exceptional Student Education at FAU. She has been a professional in special education since 1979 when she taught students with learning and behavior disabilities in middle and high school in Roanoke, Virginia. She continued her teaching at the Landmark School in Prides Crossing, Massachusetts, a residential school for students who are both dyslexic and gifted. She completed her doctoral work at the University of Arizona in Tucson with Drs. Candace Bos and Virginia Richardson. Her research work at the U of A focused on special education teacher education, specifically preparation programs for those teachers who wanted to work with students with disabilities as they transition from high school to adult life. She had the opportunity to work with other researchers at the U of A who developed employment programs for individuals with severe emotional disorders. While at Arizona she worked at Pima Community College as a Disability Services Advisor. All of these experiences have played a part in building her professional interests today. Dr. Duffy works with colleagues and students on projects revolving around transition from school to work, technology to support more independent living, and using and teaching strategies to adolescent learners. She teaches classes at FAU in the area of classroom management, assessment, transition, strategies, and assistive technology. She works with students on dissertations and field projects that are the capstone activities of their graduate programs. She is active in professional organizations such as Council for Exceptional Children, holding membership in the Teacher Education Division (TED), Division for Career Development and Transition (DCDT) and Division for Learning Disabilities (DLD). She attends conferences and usually takes along students to these events, encouraging them to present papers and posters of their own design. She also serves as a field editor for Journal of Rehabilitation and Journal of Teacher Education. Dr. Duffy teaches on the beautiful Jupiter campus of FAU.
