Dr. Allgood earned a Doctorate in Educational Leadership (Ed.D) from Florida Atlantic University in 1999. She was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society in 1994 when she earned a Master of Arts in Teaching degree also at FAU. She was awarded a U.S. Department of Education (D.O.E.) Full Academic Scholarship for the M.A.T. degree. She received a Bachelor of Science in Education (Cum Laude) from Elmira College in New York in 1973.
Dr. Allgood is currently an Instructor in the College of Education, Department of Curriculum, Culture and Educational Inquiry (CCEI) at Florida Atlantic University. She started teaching at the university in 1995 while simultaneously pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership with a focus on Prejudice reduction and equity in public schools.
In addition to teaching at the university, community college, elementary, middle and high school levels, Dr. Allgood has also been an education director and national consultant for an international non-profit civil rights agency, an author, inspirational speaker, a Fulbright research investigator, a children’s book editor, a career development specialist in a social services agency dedicated to serving at-risk youth in alternative education programs, and a professional reviewer of books, prospectuses and monographs for Allyn and Bacon Publishers and Vanderbilt University.
Her presentations at the National Organization for Multicultural Education (NAME), in Orlando, FL entitled “Deterring Prejudice in Schools through Curriculum and Process Models” and “Preparing Multiculturally Literate Teachers for the 21st Century: The Application of Research Findings in Professional Development” received national attention. A paper she co-authored, “Preparing Culturally Responsive Teachers” was presented at the annual meeting of American Educational Research Association (AERA) in San Diego, CA.
As the Regional Education Director of the Anti-Defamation League, an international civil rights agency, she wrote, procured, and directed multiple grant projects simultaneously. She was awarded a one-million dollar grant and with it she launched an extensive anti-bias educational initiative throughout the 9th largest school district in the nation. She implemented a major educational program initiative while overseeing more than 300 workshops, conferences, seminars and events reaching nearly ten thousand participants in hundreds of schools, civic, community and workplace organizations in south Florida. Evidence of her work and anti-bias curriculum is still evident in Palm Beach County schools.
At the university she developed a graduate level course entitled "Prejudice and Equity in Education" and is developing the accompanying textbook and materials for this course. Her research includes the development of a multi-domain curricular framework that was found to significantly reduce prejudice and dogmatism levels in college students enrolled in teacher education programs. Her book chapter: The Role of the School in Deterring Prejudice appears in the textbook: Multicultural Education for the 21st Century and is required reading in graduate courses.
