The Journal's Vision

Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators main goal is to provide research, resources, and a forum for improving mathematics education internationally while addressing the math anxious.  The hope is to create a society as a whole whom are confident in their ability to do mathematics in order to compete globally in an ever-advancing technological world which relies so heavily on excelling in the areas of mathematics, the sciences, and technology use.

The Journal's Audience

Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators, “An Online Journal Addressing Attitudes, Anxiety, Confidence, and Best Practices in the Teaching of Mathematics Pre-K and Beyond,” is intended for all mathematics educators Pre-K and beyond and other interested parties to provide research, best practices, teaching ideas, a forum, and resources/weblinks that address issues related to math anxiety, math attitudes, the building of math confidence, and overall best practices in the teaching of mathematics. 
 

The Journal's Mission/Philosophy Statement
 

Joseph M. Furner, the founder of this journal's main intention is to provide a formal forum for the dissemination of research and research results, best practices, teaching ideas, and resources that address issues related to math anxiety, mathematics attitudes, the building of math confidence, and overall best practices in the teaching of mathematics.  As the vision statement says one of the main goals of this journal is to enhance best practices in the teaching of mathematics to better prepare society as a whole to be confident in their ability to do mathematics in an ever-advancing technological and globally competitive world.

Submission Overview

Submissions appropriate for Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators include research and expository articles, essays and thought pieces, and professional observations and discussions which focus specifically on issues of content, pedagogy, philosophical and practical theory, research, best practices, teaching ideas, all which are in keeping with the theme of the journal; hence, related to math anxiety, math attitudes, the building of math confidence, and overall best practices in the teaching of mathematics Pre-K and beyond.  Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators is an international refereed journal with the main goal being to stimulate the sharing of ideas and discussion among its contributors and readers to ultimately improve mathematics instruction while addressing the math anxious. 

The Refereeing Process

Manuscript submissions will be reviewed based on a blind referee format by professional educators and mathematicians which will be chosen by the editors according to their areas of specialization for appropriateness of the topic, validity of the research results or conclusions, general interest in a topic, and adherence to generally accepted standards of good writing.  Manuscripts sent to Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators should be in keeping with the theme of the journal; hence, related to mathematics attitudes, math anxiety, confidence building, and overall best practices for teaching mathematics in hope that such research will advance and improve the teaching of mathematics and develop mathematically confident young people.

Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators is intended to provide a formal forum for the dissemination of the research results, insights, and ideas of professional educators and mathematicians on the wide variety of issues that pertain to math attitudes, math anxiety, math confidence building, and overall best practices for teaching mathematics to Pre-K and beyond. Thus, Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators encourages submissions in the form of high quality manuscripts from 5 to 15 pages, single spaced, 12-point type font. Submissions may include research and expository articles, essays and thought pieces, or professional observations and discussions which focus specifically on issues of content and pedagogy, philosophical and practical, related to math attitudes, math anxiety, math confidence building, and overall best practices for the teaching of mathematics to Pre-K and beyond.

Please be sure to include the names and affiliations of all authors, along with a 50 to 100 word abstract of the article on an individual sheet. This will help to contribute to the anonymity of the refereeing process of manuscripts submitted to Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators.

There is no submission deadline. Manuscripts will be accepted anytime year-round.

The Refereeing Process

 

Manuscript submissions will be reviewed in a blind referee format by professional educators and mathematicians which will be chosen by the editors according to areas of specialization for appropriateness of the topic, validity of the research results and/or conclusions, general interest in the topic while keeping in line with the mission of the journal, and overall adherence to generally accepted standards of good writing.

The Publication Schedule of Articles Accepted

All articles accepted for publication on Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators  will be published online as they are accepted by the editors, once the editors have received the final print version with edits/revisions recommended by the reviewers/editors and the journal has obtained joint copyright it will be placed online. Each online article will be assigned a volume, issue, and page numbers.

The Submission Formats

When an article is accepted for publication on Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators  the author(s) will be expected to provide it in final form to Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators in one of the following electronic formats:

  • WordPerfect® Document, Version 6.0 or later
  • Microsoft® Word Document, Version 6.0 or later
  • Rich Text Format

 

Graphical images and photos which are part of a manuscript need to be submitted in one of the following formats:

  • Camera-ready Copy
  • Encapsulated PostScript File
  • Tagged Image File Format (TIF file)

The Submission Style

When an article is accepted for publication on Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators the author(s) will be expected to provide it to Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators in the general style adopted by Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators. It is preferred that all manuscripts are in the APA style format.  

The Abstract

When an article is accepted for publication on Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators the author(s) will be expected to provide the abstract and biographical sketches of it, in separate files, to Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators in one of the following electronic formats:

The Professional Forum

The Professional Forum is open to all mathematics educators and other’s interested in sharing ideas, opinions, research, thoughts, and resources with each other as they relate to math anxiety, math attitudes, math confidence, and overall best practices for the teaching of mathematics PreK and beyond.  The forum will allow you to read, respond to, and create your own forum questions.  It is considered a professional means of dialoguing with other mathematics educators and other interested parties, please be respectful of each other’s individual views and opinions.

Tips and Checklist for Authors

1. Title page
The title should not be long but should be informative. Each title page should contain:
(i) The title of the paper in English, (ii) The complete name(s) of the author(s), (iii) The name, title, address, telephone number, fax, and E-mail address of contributing authors.

2. Abstract
Each paper should always be preceded by an abstract in English. The abstract should be short and self-contained and all essential points of the paper should be mentioned.

3. References
References must be listed in alphabetical order following the APA style.

4. Footnotes
Footnotes, except a possible acknowledgement of assistance or financial support on the first page should be avoided by being incorporated into the text.

5. Tables and Figures
All illustrations not including tables (photographs and other films, drawings, graphs, etc. ) must be labeled as "Figure".
The proper position of each table and figure must be clearly indicated in the paper.
All tables and figures should have a number (Table 1. Figure 1) and a caption or legend. If there is only one table or figure simply label it "Table" or "Figure".
All tables and figures must be numbered consecutively throughout the paper.
All captions and legends should also be single-spaced typed on a separate sheets and labeled according to which table or figure they belong (Typically placed in an appendix).
Dimensions of tables and figures should not exceed 13x16 cm.
Tables must be clearly typed, each on a separate sheet, and double-spaced. Dimensions including caption title, column heads, and footnotes must not exceed 13x16 cm. Tables may be continued onto another sheet if necessary but dimensions still apply.
Figures must be originals and drawn clearly in India ink on white paper or printed on smooth tracing/drawing paper. Reduced photocopies are not acceptable Photographs should be clear, black and white or colored, and printed on glossy paper.

7. Computer Files
Please send manuscripts as attachments that have been virus checked as either a Word, Wordperfect, or Rich Text Format(RTF) file.

8. Manuscript for possible publication should be E-mailed to one of the editors.

Abstract

          The abstract for  Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators should be single spaced, in italics, with 12 point type and should be fully justified. The abstract should contain between 50 and 100 words. It should contain key words sufficient to describe the contents of the article to attract search engines. 

 

Introduction/Body

          Each article should be 5 to 15 pages in length, including the references and biographical sketches. As is traditional in most research papers, they should include: introductions; literature reviews; methodologies for research; data and research findings; and discussion/conclusions which should all be part of such manuscripts.  As mentioned in the abstract, the article should be fully justified. Page numbers may be centered at the bottom, beginning with this page as page 1. Section headings should be centered in bold face. APA is the preferred style for reference citations for Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators. Footnotes should not be used in the text of the paper.

 

Summary

          Each paper should include an appropriate summary or conclusions. Overall, these guidelines are intended to assist authors in the preparation of the final versions of the electronic manuscripts to be published on Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators. 

 

References

Please list all works cited in the article in alphabetical order according to last name of first author, or name of organization.  APA Style is the preferred style for citations.

 

Biographical Sketch(es)

          A short biographical sketch of each author will be placed with their article published on Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators. Included in these sketches should be information on the academic background, research interests, and current professional positions of each author; as well as, any other personal information the authors wish to share.  It is encouraged that authors include their E-mail addresses so that others may contact them about their research.

 

10. A Few Last Minute Tips as a Final Check to keep in Mind before Submitting

Before you submit your work, please take the time to be certain that your paper is in the correct format and that you have included everything necessary by checking it against this checklist:

--Copyright is given to the journal, Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators, once Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators, receives the final print version from the author(s) once Mathitudes: An Online Journal for Mathematics Educators has accepted one’s article for publication.

"Mathitudes Online Showcases......."

 

Check out FAU's Math Day-


FAU Math Day will be held on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Room 113 of the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing Building on the Boca Raton campus.

Math Day is designed to bring together teachers and students from local high schools with FAU mathematics faculty and students, with the ultimate purpose of inspiring some of these students to pursue careers in mathematics or related fields.  

The main event of the day will be two math competitions for the students: individual and team competitions with cash prizes awarded.
 
Additionally, renowned mathematician Heinz-Otto Peitgen will present a
lecture on fractal theory at 1:30 p.m.  

By sponsoring Math Day, the Department of Mathematical Sciences, together with the Center for Cryptology and Informational Security, Publix Super Markets, Inc. and the Marlin Community Foundation, are  helping to keep the United States at the forefront of scientific research.
