MASTER’S OF EDUCATION IN CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION
PLUS SECONDARY EDUCATION or K-12 CERTIFICATION


The Master's of Education in Curriculum & Instruction Plus Secondary or K-12 Certification includes professional education and subject area courses leading to a master's degree in education as well as initial certification in a specific secondary or K-12 subject area.  This program is designed for students who have already completed a bachelors degree including a minimum concentration of 33+ semester hours of specific course work in one of the following secondary subject areas:  Art, Biology, Chemistry, English, French, Mathematics, Music, Physics, Social Science or Spanish.

Admission Requirements:  To be admitted to the Master’s Degree in Curriculum & Instruction Plus Secondary Certification program, students must complete the graduate application and provide documentation of:

  • a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university,

  • satisfactory GRE (Graduate Record Examination) scores (see below) on file at FAU (not more than five years old),

  • a 3.0, or better, on the last 60 semester hours of undergraduate work prior to the granting of the bachelor’s degree and a minimum score of 800  on the general section of the Graduate Record Examination (quantitative and verbal combined–not analytical),

OR 

  • a 2.5, or better, on the last 60 semester hours of undergraduate work prior to the granting of the bachelor’s degree and a score of 1000, or better, on the general section of the Graduate Record Examination (quantitative and verbal combined–not analytical). 
     

  • Additionally, the applicant MUST have passing scores on all four sections of the CLAST exam

    IF

    the GRE Verbal and Quantitative combined (not analytical) is below 1000. If the GRE score is 1000 or above, the CLAST exam is not required. There are no exceptions of waivers to this requirement. After it has been determined that students have met this state of Florida  requirement, all other university and college admission requirements will apply.
     

  • Students need to have been admitted by the Department of Teacher Education.
     

  • Students need to have been accepted into the Secondary or K-12 Teacher Education Certification Program (separate application).

Professional Education Prerequisite Courses: (21 semester hours):

Initial Certification in Secondary or K-12 Subject Required (33+ required specific semester hours):  
See individual Secondary Teacher Education Certification Program Guides for information regarding prerequisite initial certification in the following specific secondary subject areas: Art, Biology, Chemistry, English, French, German, Mathematics, Music, Physics, Social Science and Spanish.

Secondary Content (6 semester hours toward M.Ed.):
Subject area (required): two 6000-Level Courses (6 semester hours)  
Additional courses in subject area must align with content requirements of undergraduate education degree in that content area: (6-9 graduate semester hours)

Student Internship (6-10 semester hours toward M.Ed.):

EDG 6940: Student Internship (required) is a full-time fall or spring semester experience and requires a separate application.  Everyone must complete all courses (education and subject area), the CLAST and the FTCE before internship.
