The induction services are comprised of the following three components:
- Coaching and Mentoring.
- Professional Development .
- Professional Certification Options.
Formal and informal coaching and mentoring opportunities guide participants as they learn and grow to become increasingly effective educators. Collaboration with District departments provide solid growth experiences through:
- Induction Teams.
- New Educator Support System (NESS).
- Online cadre of mentors and coaches with content specific expertise.
Participants will engage in the professional development offerings of Teaching in the Content Area and Behavior and Classroom Management. Professional development is offered on weekday evenings to accommodate the working participant. These professional development courses allow the participant to:
- Apply technological tools available through B.E.E.P (Broward's Enterprising Educational Portal).
- Engage in hands-on technological resources developed for Broward School Teachers.
In addition, the District offers the New Teacher Academy (NTA), the week-long high quality professional development event designed collaboratively by Human Resource Development, Core Curriculum and Instructional Technology to provide new teachers with effective high-yield instructional strategies, classroom management techniques, core curriculum content area materials, professionalism practices and strategies of integrating technology to make their initial classroom experience successful.
Fifteen semester hours of non-traditional course-by-course graduate and undergraduate college credit through FAU in the following education areas:
- Classroom management including safe learning environments.
- Human development and learning.
- Educational assessment to include the content measured by state achievement tests and the interpretation and utilization of data to improve student achievement.
- Effective instructional strategies including the needs of diverse learners.
- Curriculum and special methods of teaching in the middle or secondary school.
- Foundations of research-based practices in teaching reading.
To fulfill the requirement of "foundations of research-based practices in teaching reading," the PROMISE participant will have the option to take FAU’s graduate level course or the equivalent graduate level reading course offered by Nova Southeastern University through Broward’s Virtual University. - Participants are organized through cohorts (two cohorts per year beginning in June and January) and receive professional development and college coursework through the cohort setting.
- Program targets 75 individuals per year.
- Courses will be held during the weekday evenings and on Saturdays. Specific dates and rooms are announced at an Orientation Session for those who have been selected to participate in the program.
