The Broward County School District, in partnership with the Teaching and Leadership Center at FAU, offered the STAR program, an intensive alternative teacher preparation and certification program for mid-career professionals and recent college graduates who have a bachelor’s degree or higher in a field other than education. The STAR program was specifically designed for:

• Prospective and current secondary non-education trained temporary certified teachers in mathematics, science, special education, or English/language arts; and
• Current teachers on a temporary certificate needing alternative certification teaching elementary or social studies on the secondary level in a Broward County public school.

The STAR program provided initial alternative certification and professional preparation activities to ensure program participants were well trained to enter the classroom. The STAR program was funded through the U.S. Department of Education’s Transition to Teaching Grant initiative.
